We have all heard the safety instructions on an airplane: in case of an emergency, put your oxygen mask on first before assisting others. This simple advice is not only useful for flying, but for life in general. It tells us that we need to take care of our own well-being first before we can help anyone else.
You may think that putting yourself first is selfish or irresponsible. You may think that you don’t deserve to take care of yourself, or that you don’t have time for it. You may think that your needs are not important, or that they can wait. But they can’t. And they shouldn’t.
The reality is that if you don’t put yourself first, you will eventually run out of oxygen. You will suffocate under the pressure and stress of life. You will lose your sense of joy and purpose. You will become exhausted and overwhelmed. You will not be able to help anyone... not even yourself.
That’s why you need to put your oxygen mask on first. That’s why you need to prioritize your own well-being before trying to help others. So how can you put yourself first? Here are some tips:
Identify your needs. What are the things that make you feel healthy, happy, and balanced? These could be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual needs. For example, you may need enough sleep, nutritious food, exercise, meditation, hobbies, socializing, learning, etc.
Set boundaries. Learn to say no to the things that drain your energy or violate your values. Respect your own limits and preferences. Don’t let others guilt-trip or pressure you into doing things that you don’t want to do or that are harmful to you.
Ask for help. You don’t have to do everything by yourself. Delegate tasks that you can’t or don’t want to do. Seek support from people who care about you and who can offer their skills, advice, or empathy. Join a community or a group that shares your interests or goals.
Practice gratitude. Appreciate what you have and what you have achieved. Recognize your strengths and talents. Celebrate your successes and learn from your failures. Express your gratitude to yourself and to others who have helped you along the way.
Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with compassion and respect. Don’t judge yourself harshly or compare yourself to others. Forgive yourself for your mistakes and accept yourself as you are. Reward yourself for your efforts and achievements.
This is not selfish or irresponsible. This is actually the most responsible and compassionate thing you can do for yourself and for others. By taking care of yourself first, you will be able to breathe better, think more clearly, and act wiser. You will be more resilient and adaptable to face the challenges and changes in life. You will be happier and more fulfilled, and this will reflect on your relationships and interactions with others. You will be able to give more generously and effectively, and they will appreciate it.

With gratitude,
Amin
